Composed and recorded in collaboration with Swiss producer Dejot during their Pro Helvetia-supported residency in Johannesburg last year, BHOTELA is a seven-track studio recording that continuing to skillfully blend kwaito and hip hop. ´Bhotela´ is an isiZulu word for butter, but as Robin explains, “in the townships it also refers to cheesy boys, or misfits: basically, the different kids.”

BHOTELA broadens the aesthetic and thematic palette of the Umlazi-born rapper, contrasting with previous darker hits such as Rolling Stone or Somdanger. The EP´s hit single Mina Nawe (isiZulu for ‘Me and You’) has already been praised by specialized media: “Mina Nawe takes on a refreshingly moderato pace alongside playful synth call-and-responses. Influenced by Brown Dash and Mdu Masilela, spherically-dense lines with a touch of subtly-pitched bass and crisp claps beautifully steer Nyawose’s romantic vocal direction”, said Texx and the City.

Robin Thirdfloor´s touring experiences, which include Swaziland, Mozambique and more recently the US (after being selected for the official showcase for prestigious festival SXSW), gravitate around BHOTELA: “Travelling outside of South Africa has made me realise that outside of our borders they hardly know about us. I believe my purpose it to school others about where I´m from. I think people are ready for new stories from the township, we´re not all gangsters to be scared of.”
